The McIntire District, which includes hundreds of Federal and Georgian period historic homes, is named for the architect who designed many of its notable homes and buildings - Samuel McIntire (1757 - 1811).

Samuel McIntire was born in Salem and lived for much of his life at 31 Summer Street, a home that he built himself in 1786.

McIntire designed and built Federal-style mansions for many of Salem's most prosperous residents. One of McIntire's most notable works within Salem is Hamilton Hall.

The Peabody Essex Museum owns several homes within the McIntire Historic District including the Peirce-Nichols House (located at 80 Federal Street), the Colting-Smith Assembly House (located at 138 Federal Street), and the Ropes Mansion (located at 318 Essex Street.)

A do it yourself walking tour of the McIntire Historic District was created by the Essex National Heritage Area. The tour takes you to many of the most important historic homes. Learn more about the McIntire Historical District tour.

The modern day McIntire Historic District was designated as a historic district in 1981. Significant streets within Salem's McIntire District include Federal Street, Chestnut Street, Essex Street, Broad Street, and Cambridge Street. The McIntire Historic District is the largest of Salem's historic districts.
